  Department Of English

About The Department

The English Department of Kamrup College Chamata was established on July28,1966. It is a worth recalling for the department to cherish the contribution of the founder teacher oh the Department Mr. Harmahon Sarma who started the Department as the lone teacher. Mr. Sarma, who gave almost voluntary services at the venture stage of the college, was later on ably supported by Mr. Chiranjib Jain and Mr. Munin Bhattacharyya. Though Mr. Jain left the college in its venture stage itself Mr. Harmahon Sarma, Mr.Munin Bhattacharyya  and Mr. Haren Deka served the Department till the age of their superannuation .Our present Head of the Department, also joined this Department at its kid stage.
As English is a Core Subject in the H.S. and Degree level, the Department of English is the main Department of the College and it has been functioning since 1966, the foundation year of the college. The Department has introduced Major Course from 1996-97.

Vision

The vision of the Department of English is universal education for all. Imbibed with the noble spirit of helping the students of all category in general and educationally disadvantaged in particular, the Department of English vows to help them in making them fit in a competitive world of business and official communication by taking care that the students who mostly have come from vernacular background can understand and express themselves in English language. Besides helping them to grasp the syllabus contents of their Higher Secondary and Degree level Course, the Department is also dedicated to improve their overall Personality. Also, it remains the honest endeavour of the Department to keep alive the study of Literature and Language in the greater area of West Nalbari and thereby to foster the sense of love care, true emotion and judgment- the aspects upon which the human civilization is based.

Infrastructure

The department of English has no separate building of its own. The major classes are held in a departmental room and the general classes are held in halls. The teachers of the department enjoys the facility of a Departmental Chamber to collectively or individually discharge their normal academic or  activities. The  department uses the following equipments

    Evaluation
   

Students academic standing is assessed through class tests which are conducted periodically besides the unit tests conducted by the  Examination Committee of the college. Moreover, through sessional and annual tests , performance of the students are monitored and their capability ascertained, failing which remedial measures are suggested for their betterment.
The English  Department runs remedial coaching classes for these students without charging any fee.

    Inter-Disciplinary approach
   

There is always some inter disciplinary relations among  the different departments. The department of English hold seminars and general classes inviting the teachers and students of other departments of the college for mutual and allied learning. 

    Examination System
   

There are two types of examination system, such as , (a) Internal and (b) External examination system.

  1. Internal Examination :– The Department English  holds unit tests at regular intervals and two Sessional Examinations.
  2. External examinations – External examinations mean Semester I, Semester II, Semester III, Semester IV, Semester V& Semester VI .

    TEACHING METHOD AND DEPARTMENTAL EXERCISE
   

Our level of study is higher Secondary and undergraduate in Arts Stream. The teaching Method is basically through Classroom lectures, assignments and Discussion. However, keeping in mind the poor capacity of the larger numbers of learners the Department takes some innovative methods to impart the learning of English. The innovative method includes group discussion, group task, brain storming method of developing interest, easy English avoiding complicated words etc.
In the general level we give stress on classroom operation and encourage comprehension writing, paragraph writing to enhance their writing skill, while extempore speech and ready made speech, Reading practice are equally encouraged for proper development of speech. In addition, weekly seminars and annual Departmental Seminars are organized for proper exposure of the students. Students are encouraged to take part in literary activities through their association with THE ENGLISH ASSOCIATION, a departmental organization to boost their their overall development recently the department also has institutionalized the course of SPOKEN ENGLISH.

    LIBRARY AND MEMBERSHIP
   

The department of English has managed one departmental library. This library is unique in the way that it has collected many of the Folk literary translations related to the Folk tales and culture of Assam.  The collection of master pieces of in Indian Literature in three volumes is an important addition to this library. However, it is needless to mention that these are in addition to the major literary and communicative books in English besides the audio visual cassettes and compact disks. The membership of this library is mostly limited the major students and teachers of the department. Each major student can lend two books at a time for a period of seven days (on special request the can keep these book for longer periods). There is no bar for departmental teachers.
Again, there is no bar for college faculty and college students to have easy reading access to these books and facilities of the department. The bar lies only in lending these books.  At present Departmental library has following number of entries:

    THE ENGLISH ASSOCIATION
   

The English Association is the departmental  organization formed with the aim of making the tie more closer with teachers and students of the department. The Association provides the students and teachers of the department a platform to discuss various issues on literary topics. The organization is responsible for organizing extra curricular activities of the Department viz. Seminars, Quizzes etc. The Association selects its office bearer through mutual agreement and enjoys only one year term after the elapsed of which is constituted afresh. The Association ha its own Letterheads.
